Potosi, Bolivia - highest city in the world
Potosi is the highest city in the world, at 4050 metres above sea level. We spent a day here visiting the mines, where all the silver, tin and other metals excavated in Bolivia are found. Miners spend their days chewing coca leaves (a very mild form of cocaine) which give them energy to do backbreaking work for 10 hours per day. We brought presents of coca leaves and dynamite (yes, honestly..you can buy a stick of dynamite as a gift) to the miners which were really appreciated. The work they do is in really primitive conditions..and they descend up to 100 metres below the ground..after an hour long tour which involved scrambling and climbing through small tunnels (not for the chlostrophobic!), we were quite happy to see daylight again.
A good experience but a very sad day for Conor's camera..dust got inside it and it hasn't worked since..hence the lack of photos :(
