Valparaiso & Vina Del Mar

Spent a few days in San Pedro de Atacama, in the north of Chile..the most expensive place we have been..a bit of a shock to the pockets after a month in Bolivia! Its a dusty wee town, right in the middle of the Atacama desert so it all feels a bit surreal! Anyway, from there it was yet another long bus journey down to Santiago and a connection straight over to Valparaiso. We needed a bit of sea air after so much time at high altitude. Valparaiso was beautiful, stayed in a lovely wee place up high, looking down over the port and all the activity. Little cobblestone streets to wander around at nightime, cute cafes and a nifty little system with elevators up and down to where were staying from the main city centre. A very pretty place to chill out for a few days, and 10 mins away is the resort of Vina del Mar where it seems everyone from Chile comes to lie on the beach! We got toasted...fools that we are with our irish skin! Here´s a few pics from Valparaiso.

Link to picture album From Valparaiso it was a short spin back to Santiago, for a few days exploring the city. Hadnt heard anything great about it but it was a pleasant place, we got lucky staying in Bellavista, a lovely part of town. Took a wander around the main square to see the Christmas preparations..a big Christmas tree and lots of carol singing..all seems a bit surreal in 30 degree sunshine! Took it very handy on the socialising..mad expensive unfortunately..although wine is nice and cheap :)

Punta del Diablo, Uruguay

According to our good old reliable Lonely Planet, Punta del Diablo is one of South America´s top 5 beaches..so we needed little encouragement to stop off here en route to Brazil Pure heaven! The town is really underdeveloped..no ATM, a few restaurants and a supermarket and that´s about it! The place was packed though, we are hitting these places at the height of the summer...finding somewhere to stay was a bit of a nightmare, but once settled we could kick back and enjoy the place for what it is. A 3 night stay turned into 5 and could have been longer.We were in no hurry to leave the place. Finally tore ourselves away and headed further north to cross the border into Brazil, a few hours up the coast road by bus. The place attracts a hippy surfing crowd so beach parties were plentiful every night, lots of bongos and in general a cool vibe around the place.

Salar de Uyuni

Link to picture album The Salt Flats in Bolivia was earmarked to be one of the highlights of our trip...and it didn't let us down! The landscape is incredible...almost surreal. We took a 4 day jeep trip across the Flats and on into northern Chile. Most of our travel was at almost 5,000 metres high..
